Warning Regarding Products Containing Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia)
Tongkat ali is a plant used in herbal preparations. Herbal products containing tongkat ali were not, or were hardly, available on the European market before 15 May 1997. Therefore, they are legally considered "novel foods." The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that tongkat ali is genotoxic and may therefore potentially cause cancer. As a result, herbal preparations based on this plant are banned in the European Union.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) warns that such preparations may potentially be carcinogenic.
